E-book Scraps of Hope in Banda Aceh (Helsinki University Press, 2020) is out!
First release from the new series Pro et Contra. Books from the Finnish Political Science Association:
Jauhola, Marjaana (2020) Scraps of Hope in Banda Aceh: Gendered Urban Politics of Peace in the Aceh Peace Process. Helsinki: Helsinki University Press.
This Open Access (freely available) research monograph Scraps of Hope in Banda Aceh offers a critical contribution to the study of post-conflict politics. It examines the rebuilding of the city of Banda Aceh in Indonesia in the aftermath of the celebrated Finland-based peace mediation process, thirty years of armed conflict, and the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquakes and the tsunami.
Following the lives of people through their everyday experiences, it offers insights into the relations of power and structures of violence that are embedded in the peace: layered exiles and displacement; hidden narratives of violence and grief; struggles over gendered expectations of being a good and respectable woman and man; the hierarchical political economy of post- conflict and tsunami reconstruction; and multiple ways of arranging lives and remembrance, cherishing loved ones and forming caring and loving relationships outside the normative notions of nuclear family and home.
Seven chapters are supported by 14 documentary videos reflecting individuals’ experiences on rebuilding the city.
